Next-generation netbook launches to benefit Taiwan IC designers in 1Q09
Taiwan IC design companies have seen stronger orders in January from netbook OEMs thanks to the upcoming launches of new generation Acer Aspire One netbooks as well as Asustek Computer's new Eee PC model and the Sony P series. Built-in cam chip supplier Sonix Technology and ALi, keyboard controller makers Ene Technology and Integrated Technology Express (ITE) and Ethernet supplier Realtek Semiconductor all expect to see sales increase in January from December and a continuous growth in the first quarter.
Acer has reportedly forecasted shipments in the tens of millions for its Aspire One netbooks in 2009.
Sonix and ALi's shipments of PC cam chip product lines in January are expected to have a large increase from December. The order visibility for February and March is also growing, said the companies.
Ene optimistically expects its January sales to grow from NT$51.08 million (US$1.52 million), and the market estimates the total will challenge NT$70 million, up 40% sequentially. ITE's sales in January may also see an increase of over 100% thanks to strong shipments of keyboard controllers and the effects from the acquisition of Afa Technologies (Afatech), Chip Advanced Technology and Smedia Technology, indicated the sources.
Realtek is expected to see NT$800 million in sales this month, up 10% from December, the sources noted. The company has sampled a new WLAN single chip for design-in and expects to have shipment growth for its products in the second quarter.
