Taiwan’s Electronic Component Output to Grow 4.4%

Taiwan has been at a vantage point in the global electronic component industry. Taiwan’s electronic component industry has benefited from the popularization of smart devices in recent years, boosting the supply of upstream key electronic components such as PCB, HDI, connector, and battery. According to a May 2014 research report by the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) IEK electronic component research team, Taiwan’s electronic component market will gain its momentum, driven by new smart consumer products and wearable devices to be released in the 1^st quarter of 2014.

According to ITRI, the consumer electronics markets in developed countries have slowly recovered. High specification and average priced smart handheld devices are hitting the market. Meanwhile, the markets of Internet of things, wearable devices and applications are growing. All these factors are expected to bring out a steady growth in production value of Taiwan’s electronic components. The annual growth is estimated to reach 4.4% in 2014, with production value of NT$ 910.67 billion (as shown in table).

Year 2014 marks the Year One of wearable devices, with brands such as LG, Sony, Intel, and Qualcomm releasing new products. The Google Glass, Apple iWatch and Samsung Gear are under spotlight this year. Therefore, the future of electronic components lies in embedded circuit board or substrate technologies.

In the near future, business owners will still take proactive action to continue investing on components of smart handheld devices. In the long run, on the other hand, to stay competitive in the shifting market, manufacturers are advised to invest in automobile, medical electronic devices, or emerging fields such as the energy sector.
